A TV For No 3D? You Bet At This Price I'm In

The LG 50PA650T. £500.00

Right now you would think the Plasma market is having a little bit of a shall we say nose dive at the moment, but it seems LG haven't heard that rumour. With the 'New' kids on the block of the likes of OLED and ULTRA HD it does seem they are the flavour of the month. But if you can produce a product that not only can deliver on picture, but price as well, well your well in there... aren't you?
lets find out shall we.

The Looks
Fig 1. The Front has a Nice Slim Line Bezal

Featuring a FULL HD display (1920 x 1080) and a Freeview HD tuner along with 600hz Processing and picture calibration tools to out do many more expensive sets, its got to be the deal of the year hasn't it?.
Well lets have a look first at what the TV hasn't got before we get to excited shall we. If your that bothered about connecting your TV to the internet or to stream content from your latest Smartphone or PC then you can forget it as the set does have a Ethernet port but that's for the Freeview HD tuner, and as the title said there is no 3D playback featured either, but not a bad thing if your only playing back 2D content. I personally think its a nice looking set and the thin bezal has a lot to do with that, as there is nothing worse in my eyes these days than a massive black frame around a slimmed display, it sort of defeats the object of having a super slim TV.
Fig 2. It's Not Just Slim From the Front Either

The Performance
I've seen some beautiful TV's in the last say year or so and this one I must admit is a little bit of a looker, but the actual picture quality is what I'm talking and looking for here so lets see.
Obviously I cant just walk into a shop and pick up the TV and ask to borrow it for a couple of days can I (well not yet anyway, but here's hoping) so what I have to do is do my research and have a look in the shops and see through asking what the TV can do and this is what I found.
It's contrast is very impressive for starters it way ahead of sets costing less than this, there is great shadow detail also from the clips of 'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter; that I saw. Blacks are very convincing without crushing detail or loosing any depth. The brightness isn't sucked out of the screen as this is a self-emissive Plasma rather than a LCD technology. Even if you tend to watch your TV off axis the set doesn't lose to much contrast. Skin tones are very lifelike even if the Film itself has been made a little Orangy for faces anyway. To sum it up it makes films and HD broardcasts look rather cinematic. Motion is handled very well compared to LCD screens at this price point, when Abraham throws his axes around the screen every part of the axe stays on the track, instead of blurring as it flies. There is a little judder but it's not a Panasonic VT50 is it?. It does suffer as do all plasmas with image retention which leaves ghostly smudges on screen for a little longer than usual, but run the TV for a few months and that should soon go. Or you could just start straight away by lowering the contrast and brightness.
Fig 3. Around the Back we Have a Good Selection of Connections

Connectivity
You get 3 HDMI ports to plug most of your gear into, (on the side) but if you own a Receiver then it shouldn't be to much of a problem, as you would be using that as your main switching unit anyway. USB connectivity is there to for JPEGS and Firmware updates, also a Digital Audio Output is included, so if you own a Soundbar you are catered for, as is the bog standard Composite, Component and RGB Scart sockets and not to mention the RF input for your HD signal.

My Conclusion
Brilliant price, great picture and the price sums it all up for me, to get ALL this for £500 you must have the deal of the bloody century. Niggles aside like No Smart TV shouldn't bother someone who wants a set for just Blu Ray viewing or a second set for the bedroom and its NEVER going to be as bright as the LCD's out there but come on guys what more do you want eh?
