The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 3D/2D Blu Ray SteelBook Extended Edition

'Think Furnace With Wings,Flash Of Light, Searing Pain Then Poof, Your Nothing More Than A Pile Of Ash'

Fig 1. The Artwork On The Front Is Beautiful
Fig 2. As Is The Back.. Very Nice To See..

'Oh My God' was the first thing I thought when I saw this movie, its not just another Hobbit adventure. Its THE Bilbo adventure. Every movie has to start somewhere and for me this was the perfect beginning. (To be honest I really didn't have very high expectations for this movie, don't get me wrong I loved the 1st instalment of LOTR but when it came round to the 3rd I was a little confused and numb, because I wanted to know how it ALL started.. But didn't want to wait)

But Now we have a great story line, a Hobbit that is up for any adventure, until he realises he's in a little to deep for his own good. What with a journey to a Mountain with a Crazy and outlandish gang of Dwarves to reclaim treasures stolen for years from them by the dragon Smaug. The amount of detail put in to visual effects and amazing landscapes took my breath away. With swooshing swords, Bricks and boulders flying everywhere and collapsing bridges and towers, goblins and chase scenes.. I for one was very, very impressed.
Storytelling and Visual expression is bursting at the seams with cutting-edge effects, incredible motion captured creatures and, of course, Gollum.

VIDEO*****
Presented at 2.40:1 in brilliant 1080p
When I first watched this I don't think I had seen a picture so sharp and clean in all my Home Cinema
viewing. I've seen beautiful colour and fine detail but this has been taken to another level, Now I presume its down to the fantastic 4K cameras used. It's just like The Amazing Spiderman, but cleaner as there is a lot of daylight shots. The 2D Extended Disc/Movie set includes three BD50 discs, one used for the 183-minute feature film itself.
Contrast is amazing and spot on as are the black levels. The caves are dark but every amount of detail just pops off the screen. I dare anyone to find a flaw in this. Edge definition is crisp and clean, without any significant ringing or the dreaded Halo Effect.
I can say the 3D version is a little dark but that's not the film it is the Active glasses, but as I watched it in 3D to still notice the amount of detail I did is a triumph to the transfer and the cinematography.
All in its got to be 5/5 from me.. Hobbit as a Hobbit Does..

Fig 4. The Inside Holds 5 Nicely Artworked Discs..

AUDIO*****
DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO 7.1 English, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Italian Dolby Digital 5.1, Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 And Portuguese Dolby Digital 5.1.
The Bass kicks in all the major scenes and that for a Home Cinema enthusiast is not the only top priority but there's also a superb amount of Treble and Midrange to make sure swords clang and voices sound crisp and clean. The chaos of an underground Goblin Town and the middle of a cave where a certain magic ring sits sounds totally immersive and that for me puts a massive smile on my face knowing the complete system WILL get a work out.. Not only that but Howard Shore's score is sweeping and full.
For ME I have to give it a full 5/5 just because sound is just as important as picture quality.

EXTRAS*****
As this is a 5 Disc set and you have two, Yes two discs dedicated to extras there are far far to many for me to list. But for the price you pay its worth it just for the extras..
but here are just a few..

Silent Sony On PS4 Playback Of CD, MP3, Youtube and Out Of The Box Blu Ray

       **SILENT SONY**
Naughty Sony Have Been A Little To Quiet On There 'Next Gen' Console.. So What Are They NOT Telling Us...???

Fig 1. The ALL Bells and Whistles PS4..

So not long to go now then guys eh?. You've had your money taken from your account and the pre-order date looms ever closer, your hearts pounding and you just can't wait for the courier to 'Tap, Tap' on your door and hand you that magic box of tricks that Sony have been promising us..
Now You've taken it all out of the box, thrown the packaging and the leaflet crap away with it and now all you have to do is plug it all in and sit back and play a great high end graphics game of shall we say 'FIFA 14'.
Well that's what most of you will be doing, but what about those that have been wanting to intergrate it into the Home Cinema?. What do we do first.. ?
Fig 2, The Blu Ray.

Well I for one would love to pop in a Blu Ray and see how quick this beauty boots up and how well it spins our discs also wanting to see the way the 'NEW' graphics card handles things like motion and blur, picture judder, chroma and so on.
Now I think I will wait before I plug in the network cable I will just pop in the Disc and give it a go.
WOOOO!!!! here we go..
But hold on a minute.. What's that that's just appeared on the screen. A message saying the Console needs a firmware update before I can watch a Blu Ray..?
Wait a minute, what the hell, 'In The Name Of Satan's Bathroom' is going on..
I have to *UPDATE* the bloody thing before I can even watch a Movie..?
Yep that's right you DO.. and to me as a Movie/Film Lover is plain WRONG in this day and age..
Why the hell doesn't anything just work out of the box these days?.
Not only do we have to wait 2 weeks longer than the U.S for our release date but when it finally does get released it needs a 300MB update.
'Ok, Ok I will just listen to some music then and maybe rip my MP3's to the Hard Drive as I Know That Takes up A Bit Of Time'
Fig 3. CD And MP3 Playback Can't Wait...

Right CD time.. I just love being able to listen to my music sometimes without having to take the CD off of my dusty shelf and popping it in to any kind of player. And as dedicated Music servers are a lot of money these days, I found that my PS3 was great at having the ability to Rip my CD's at a great bitrate and then just browse by artist and press play, while I was playing a game of 'COD'
So here we go..
'WHAT' another message, 'Format Not Permitted On This Device' or something like that.
What the hell is going on..
So now it wont even play CD's.. OK, Ok you got me I WILL do the bloody *UPDATE*
10 Minutes later and we are all done. Finally
Now I can pop in my CD.. Hang on same bloody warning on the screen..
'This cant be right, Let me check the Manual'
5 Minutes later and it seems my worst fears have come true..
NO MP3 or CD Playback..
Oh and to top it off If I did want to listen to music I now have to join Sony's own Music Service called 'Sony Music Unlimited', but my MUSIC was Unlimited as I own 300 Discs that I have already bought, now I have to BUY them all again.. And just for a bargain price of £30.00 a year..
Fig 4. Sonys 'Music Unlimited Online Service'

These decisions, apart from the loss of a music visualizer, which is a tragedy, can be traced back to Sony’s pushing of its cloud-based music service, Music Unlimited.. Utter Bullying is what it is and I for one WILL NOT be emptying my wallet for bully's. No way.
Oh and one more happy note..NO UPLOADS to Youtube.. Which I can understand as the whole Youtube channel will be inundated with 5 minute snippets of head shots and the same old 'Look At My Over Head Kick' wonder goal.. and I for one do not want to watch that..
Remote Play WILL NOT WORK over 3G. To stream PS4 gameplay to your Vita, you’ll need a WiFi connection. Sony "strongly recommends that Remote Play be used within the same WiFi network where PS4 is connected."

So That's it my little rant over and done with..
I'm still very undecided on which console to buy next, but I know one thing this has made my quest that little bit more easier and might just make me keep my XBOX 360 a little while longer to..

So What Is My Next AV Purchase...?????

The Time Of Year Has Come For Me To Put My Order In With A Certain Mr Clause..But What Will It Be

Oh so many things and so little bloody money, but I think if there was or is one thing for me to upgrade this year its got to be my Home Cinema Receiver... But What one?
So many to choose from when it comes to manufactures, we have Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha and my personal favourite Pioneer. then there's the price factor. I can't afford to spend £1500,00 on any AV product except a 'New' Plasma or LCD display.
But this year my dreams and wishes have come true, our favourite companies have released what us erm Pros?.. call midrange products at very affordable prices, anything from £350-£450.. and that is what's great about our hobby.. even in these crazy money tight times we can treat ourselves to a product that would have been well over £800 a year or so ago..
So enough of my rambling, what will I be buying?, have a read and look below and see.

Pioneer VSX-923 Front..mmmm Sweet and sexy

I decided to go for the Pioneer VSX-923.. And there are many, many reasons why I chose this model and make over other brands and that comes down to specifications and price, have a look below to see what you get, but before you do let me tell you this.
I look for what's around the back, what power it spits out in watts and its performance. Now I have owned many brands over my 'Home Cinema' addiction and at a crazy price brand right down to the Mid-Range bracket.. and I have used a drug all the time over the last 10 years and that drug is Pioneer.
The bang for your buck and the sheer performance of these beasts out performs any I have heard and it does what I like it to do, it doesn't run so hot you could cook a egg on the chassis, it doesn't eat electricity like some power hungry Godzilla and It delivers tight bass and authentic treble with a nice midrange.. that along with inputs and outputs just about makes me the happiest man in the UK.

VSX-923 rear.. Plenty Of Inputs and Outputs.. Future Proof... 'Yep'

When it comes to specs for the 923 at a price that's affordable you cant go wrong.. here is a brief run down of what you get for wait for it..£450.00..yep just that little.
There are no fewer than 8 yes 8 HDMI inputs including 1 one the front panel and 2 HDMI outputs, so you can plug in everthing from you XBOX 360, Sky HD or Virgin Media Box, Your Blu Ray Player, PS3 and Laptop and still have room for your APPLE TV and have a spare.. superb.
Now I own 2 Panasonic Blu Ray Players, one of which is Blu Ray Multi-Region and the other DVD Multi-Region, then I have a XBOX 360 and SKY HD and a APPLE TV 3 for streaming via Airplay.
Now that's 5 out of 8 used so I'm future proofed and that also includes 4K passthrough.. Also if you happen to own a HD projector then you can feed that as well as your TV as it has the 2 HDMI outputs just the simple press of a button and your picture is duplicated on your other display..
It also includes 1000+ of internet radio stations and from a firmware update now includes Spotify.
USB is included on the front for your iPhone/iPad music playing and if you have a Android device then that's covered also.. it plays all kinds of Audio formats like, FLAC,WAV,AIFF and MP3.
She will also upscale your standard def signals if you still have some that is all the way up to 1080p.
Like I said all for £450.00,
The only small problem I have it that the remote is a little cluttered but apart from that I'm biased and giving it 5 stars all the way..

SPECS

150 watts into 6 ohms
8 HDMI Inputs
2 HDMI outputs
4 Composite inputs
1 Optical input
1 Coaxial input
Apple OS and Android Control Apps
Windows 8 compatible
vTuner Internet Radio
Upscaling to 4K
MACACC microphone (Just Plug It In And It Sets Up Your Receiver For You and Calibrates Your Room..All Very Easy)

4K Answers And Questions Answered And No Need For Red Ray

Is It Really The Best Thing To Happen To Home Cinema
Since High Definition...?
Read On And I Will Try And Tell You What I Have Heard And Know.
Now I read a lot of Home Cinema Magazines, Blogs, Webpages and Have A few Friends in the Home Cinema Business and some of the rumours are true, some not so true.. It's quite funny to see how things snowball into crazy claims and outrageous fables and myths..
Now I'm no expert at all I just only believe it when the people I know and things I read ALL come to the same conclusion.. And that's when Fiction becomes fact.

Why Should I Get Excited ?
Do you remember when you first saw and heard about High def.. Brilliant wasn't it, Well, Start getting the same feeling about 4K..It is here, Its here to stay and it is the future. Just imagine your HD image 4x better.. Your High Resolution photo's you took showing all that detail your eyes missed until you loaded it on to your screen.. Now that makes me excited...

But I Want A 4K TV/Display Ain't They Super Mega Expensive?
Well as you ALL know every 'New' product or concept is expensive until that is it gets established and just like the DVD player I imported way back 1996 was well over £400, the Blu Ray player was around that to, when the one I wanted came out. (and we are not talking PS3 here) and the same goes for Plasma, LED, LCD and 3D.. All you need to remember is things move at such a fast pace in our hobby.
When Sony released there first two 4K screens along with LG they where priced at £25,000 and £22,000 respectively for a 84" display... Now you can pick up a Sony 55" display for £4,000 and the 65" for just over £6,000..and that's within a year and a half...

Ok Then You've Got Me I'll Have A Butchers, But Are They Any Good?
You still need to remember it is still early days when it comes to 4K, and believe me when I say this it is indeed game changing when it comes to US the HD fanatics and collectors. If you want absolute pure clarity and eye popping detail then 4K is the way to go no doubt in my eyes. When the Director films in 4K there should be no difference to you when you watch it back on your 4K screen and that's the whole point of it. You have to remember 1080p is downscaled from the original 4K master so you, We, All of us ARE missing out on so much colour, detail, contrast and clarity. So if you buy a 4K display it should be the holy grail of Home Theatre.
Of course, while we wait for native 4K films and content to arrive the real big question is what about my HD stuff I have now, and the answer to that is sit back and let the TV's upscaler do its job just like you used to do when you put a DVD in your Blu Ray player. Get the most out of it..Blu Ray upscaled will look even more well HD. And if you can get hold of Mastered in 4K Blu Rays like 'The Amazing Spider-Man' then It's only going to enrich the colour and contrast.

Upscaling Blu Rays Sounds Wicked, But What About Genuine 4K material ?
Well at the moment there is not that much around unless you have a very High End PC with a 4K capable graphics card, and if you do then you can watch a small amount of content form some sites and there is a small collection on YOUTUBE'S dedicated 4K channel, so yeah there is a little about for you to watch on your new display.
But for me as a early and very much dedicated Blu Ray movie collector things have got a little more exciting over the last couple of months.

What Was That You Mentioned About A 'New' Blu Ray Specification ?
The Blu Ray disc association has been working with a lot of groups on how to best accommodate 4K and its probably the best news I've heard since 4K was released. And when NOT if the 'New' recommendations are accepted, we will get a new generation of 4K Blu Ray Players as well as a new catalogue of 4K discs
It's all down to the compression technology used and the standard that has been put forward has to be adopted. The biggest codec gaining pace is HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) hopefully becoming and heralded as a long term replacement for H.264 ( the HD coding) HEVC is powerful enough to let 4K deliver even over terrestrial TV. It's out in Korea already beaming its way around the country and streaming in Japan.
But there is more than one compression format out there and the battle has only just begun, what with Sony and Netflix teaming up to establish a compression format of its own called Eye IO in the states. Sony is going to launch its 4K streaming service using that codec. So in my eyes our physical discs are only advancing not being replaced.
So in my eyes there is no need to replace ALL my Blu Ray collection as it will look better on my 4K display when I can afford one and when they eventually become the norm. Better still for me to just have to buy yet another Blu Ray player and buy my next movie on 4K is much better than replacing my complete collection because of some 'New' streaming service that I don't own called 'Red Ray'.
which wont read my BD discs and it will mean I will have to replace everything, instead of enjoying what I already own but on a sharper, clearer display with a much bigger colour gamut.
Sounds like the future is safe and sound to me.. phew now I can sleep easy
take care guys and I hope you enjoyed my little known knowledge about the 'New' 4K standard.

Get Modded, Not Mugged By Regional Coding

Regional Coding Problems And A Player To Crack Them. But At What Price.?
Ladies And Gentlemen I Give You The
The Panasonic DMP-BDT130 Multi Region Blu Ray Player

Well I think after over 60+ posts I deserve to have a little rant and I think I will start with Region coding.
Now ever since the good old day of VHS we have had some sort of coding and that's either PAL or NTSC, then along came Laserdisc and with that 99.9% of the players sold had NTSC capability so it seemed that coding wasn't a issue of sorts anymore. Then came DVD and where did we end up not just 2 region codes, but 6.. so companies sprung up everywhere that would sell you a multi-region player for an extra £30-50. And that to US collectors of worldwide films was a blessing, we could then start to import movies from all over the world.. COOL
Well for a few years at least.. Until along came Blu Ray. But the rumours around the AV camp fire was that there was going to be NO region coding..
Little did we know that there was but as the so called experts say 'It's Only 3 Regions'. Well that's 2 to many for me.

Fig 1. The Panny is Very un-fussy, something I like

So I have over the last month got so Pissed Off (and I'm sorry for the swearing) with other country's mainly the United States getting some amazing releases and re-releases of some classic and cult films and I'll name just few of my favourites. "Monster Squad", "They Live", "Dog Soldiers" and "The Fog". that I decided to finally take the Multi Region Blu Ray leap of faith and bought myself a Modded Player.
And do you know what It's the BEST £200.00 I've EVER spent.

Fig 2. A hidden Slot Holds A USB Port And A SD Card Slot..Nice

I have looked for ages and pondered for many, many years about buying a Multi Region Blu Ray player but as our country has started to be a little more easy on the cutting of our movies and even offering UNCUT editions, I wasn't to bothered. But I now find, like I mentioned above that we have less studios wanting to buy up the rights to some brilliant movies, so US the public can view them in all there HD glory. So I used a company called Multi-Region Magic.

Fig 3. The Remote Comes With A Dedicated Netflix Button.. If You Like To Stream.

So ALL I have to do now to switch region codes is to power off the player, press 1 for Region A, Press 2 for Region B and 3 for Region C. Easy and brilliant.
So I urge ALL that want to import region A discs to go down this route as films can be cheaper, there's lots for sale on Ebay and your collection can only grow.. Bonuses all round I think.
Give them a call they have many different models and service is A1. If you can't or don't want to buy a new player then send yours off and get it chipped at a little fee. Or you can Do It Yourself, but I must stress It's for Advanced Solders Only.. So that put me right out.
Seriously Please save yourselves and Get Modded, Not Mugged.

Week Starting 9th July 2013

Well another week and more 'New' Blu Rays to add to the Collection.

The Last Stand 'Gold Edition' Steelbook
Fig 1. Another Great Looking Pich-Up 'The Last Stand' Gold Edition Has A Beautiful Gold Finish

Not content with owning 'The Last Stand' HERO PACK. I decided to do a double dip, I do,  do it when things come out that are rare or Very Limited..
And this is one of them.. with a DTS HD MASTER AUDIO 7.1 and 2.40:1 Aspect Ratio you really can't go wrong with this collectable Steelbook. If you do like the look of it and fancy picking it up then why not try Ebay.. prices are still at a medium premium around £40.00

Fig 2. The Rear J- Card/Backing Paper is Removable.. With what I have seen a picture of Arnold On the Back

The Evil Dead 2013
Fig 1. I Had to Pick This One up Early as I Missed it at the Cinema. Again Nice Artwork

With this movie out in the states nearly a month before the UK, I decided to import this one from a company I use quite a lot and the link will be at the bottom of the page so please have a look at the site. Now back to the Movie.

Fig 2. The Back of the Slip Has Very Nice Pictures, if Not a Little Shocking.

With its much built up hype (well in the UK anyway) I was looking forward to seeing this and turning up my system to 'Scare' volume. I will do a full review on my Youtube page within the next few weeks, so stayed tuned. But for those not into YouTube, I can say it's NOT a remake its what the front cover says its a 'NEW' Vision. It hardly anything like the original except the fact that there is a Cabin in the Woods and A cellar with a possessed girl.. But I must say it is a Good film not Great but hey.. Horror is hard to do these days.. Isn't It.?

Fig 3. I Just Wish There was More Inside Art Like This.. On Amaray or Steelbooks These Days..

It Does have a DTS MASTER AUDIO 5.1 Track and is Presented in Glorious 1080p at 2.39:1.
Go Get it and Watch it in a Darkened Room with the Sound up... Scary indeed?
just remember what will happen if you don't....  'We'll Rip Your Soul Out'

AND FINALY

Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters

Fig 1. The Extended Cut of the Movie, not The 3D Version.

Oh I love me a bedtime fairy tale.. 'Red Riding Hood', 'The 3 Bears' and 'Hansel & Gretel'.
This is the Latter and like the movie mentioned above, much hype. But to me I think this lived up to it. Action is fast paced. Effects are spot on and not to out of touch and the acting is pretty good.

Fig 2. See from Great Artwork to A Blinking Mess.. Just To Much Going On..

While the movie itself came across good in my opinion, I think the soundtrack is what made the movie stand out for me. From the Whistle of Gattling Gun Bullets to Witches Cackles, it all comes across crystal Clear in the DOLBY TRUE HD AUDIO 5.1 track and with a Crisp if not sometimes Dark Picture framed at 2.40:1. To me it's well worth adding to your collection.

Week Starting 1st July 2013

Well another week and more 'New' Blu Rays to add to the Collection.

Disney's Aladdin Steelbook Zavvi Exclusive
Fig 1. It's gorgeous, Stunning and Out Of Print.. Disney's Aladdin in Steelbook from Zavvi.

When it comes to steelbooks this was one I honestly didn't think Disney would be bringing out anytime soon. (I think second Finding Nemo Was 1st I think) But to there credit and much, much praise they have and it's a real stunner.

Fig 2. The Embossed Title

With it's embossed title and amazing purple and blue image recreated from the original Amaray cover. It has a gloss finish with hints of silver on things like swirls from the magic carpet, it really does look nice.

Fig 3. The Rear J Card and Details About the Movie

Audio is DTS MASTER HD 5.1 and with a Aspect Ratio of 1.85:1 it will fill your whole screen. As for the movie itself I cannot comment as I have never seen it, but believe me when I get round to it you will read it hear first.

The Smurfs Steelbook Amazon Germany
Fig 1. Yep it comes in a Box Containing Wait for it... Little Smurf's. 'Love It'

Do you know what Amazon from around the world, have some great Editions and Additions compared to the UK Amazon and this is one of them. 'The Smurfs' or as the Germans call it 'Die Schlumpfe'

Fig 2. The Front of the Steelbook itself is Glossy and Beautiful.. Yes I know I use the word a lot.. But it is

A 2D & 3D disc is included in this set and its Aspect ratio is Framed at 1.78:1, so another full screen baby and Audio is DTS MASTER HD 5.1. I shall be watching this over the weekend I hope so a review is going to be not to far away.

Fig 3. 3 of the Gang let Loose in New York. The rear is just as nice

Fig 4. Included in the Boxset/Steelbook is 3 Collectable Smurf Figures

All in all for the price I paid including postage of £21.09, this has got to be the best bargain out there at the minute. Well from a collectors point of view.
So if your after Exclusive Steelbooks and Collectors Editions then why not have a look at ALL the Amazon sites. The delivery is fast, prices are excellent. I will leave a link below to this set if anybody's interested.
Cheers for looking guys and girls, and look out for a FULL review.

A well known name that's been around for years and years they've made cheap-ish TV's for a long time and have dabbled in LED for a few years to. But now they have gone and stunned the 'Big Screen' market with this 90-incher. 3D, FULL 1080p and a polithera or connections.
There are a few problems when it comes to having such a huge screen in your room is that.. well you need a huge room to house it. And what about when its off?, well you can set the screen to the 'Wallpaper' mode and watch a giant picture of your family or choose from the included selection of built in wallpapers, now that wouldn't look out of place would it?. NO not if you have a converted Barn or Church. It's built in XGEN 3D panel delivers great detail and if you subscribe to sky I can imagine that 3D footy would look like your in the Mighty 'Anfield' stadium. I wouldn't recommend the standard 3-4 feet away as you would miss to much, I reckon it's at least more like 6-8 feet.
Fig 2. Passive 3D is on tap and glasses come in 5 different colours. Red, Blue, White, Black and Green/Yellow

The televisions Full HD screen, is capable of running at 200Hz, which means you get Brilliantly detailed and clean looking Images. Sharp wants to push the Smart TV
functionality with its 90-inch set, so you get full access to the Aquos Net+ Portal including Apps such as Skype and internet. You can also control the television using Sharp's own Android and iOS app, which allows you to use your phone to browse the internet on the TV, as well as a standard. something that most smaller TV's have had or done for a few years to.
The whole TV is finished with a Aluminium trim and is 2 metres long and a heafty 64Kg in weight. You can wallmount this monster but finding a universal bracket for it could be hit and miss.
Fig 3. Rear Connections

Connection is very good indeed, with it's 4 HDMI inputs, PC input and component input for say a games console you won't run out of connections anytime soon, but if you use your AVR then you'll only be using the one I guess. It does lack 4K combatibility, so that's a little suprising considering the price and date in which it is has been brought out. It has a Freeview HD tuner built in, but for this price it should have had Freesat as well. It does however have ARC (Audio Return Channel) so that's a little bonus as is the Built in WI-FI. If you want one then it will cost you a bit in import duty as its only available in the states at the moment, but they do a 80-inch over here in the UK link is below

So to sum up.. Would I get this for that money?
NO is my opinion, not because of the price but the fact that I can get a projector with better specs and more stable pictures and a bigger screen for half the price.
